The Word or a word? (1 Kings 13) July 13th 2002

And, behold, there came a man of God out of Judah by the word of the Lord unto Bethel: and Jeroboam stood by the altar to burn incense. [2] And he cried against the altar in the word of the Lord, and said, O altar, altar, thus saith the Lord; Behold, a child shall be born unto the house of David, Josiah by name; and upon thee shall he offer the priests of the high places that burn incense upon thee, and men's bones shall be burnt upon thee. [3] And he gave a sign the same day, saying, This is the sign which the Lord hath spoken; Behold, the altar shall be rent, and the ashes that are upon it shall be poured out. [4] And it came to pass, when king Jeroboam heard the saying of the man of God, which had cried against the altar in Bethel, that he put forth his hand from the altar, saying, Lay hold on him. And his hand, which he put forth against him, dried up, so that he could not pull it in again to him. [5] The altar also was rent, and the ashes poured out from the altar, according to the sign which the man of God had given by the word of the Lord. [6] And the king answered and said unto the man of God, Intreat now the face of the Lord thy God, and pray for me, that my hand may be restored me again. And the man of God besought the Lord, and the king's hand was restored him again, and became as it was before. [7] And the king said unto the man of God, Come home with me, and refresh thyself, and I will give thee a reward. [8] And the man of God said unto the king, If thou wilt give me half thine house, I will not go in with thee, neither will I eat bread nor drink water in this place: [9] For so was it charged me by the word of the Lord, saying, Eat no bread, nor drink water, nor turn again by the same way that thou camest. [10] So he went another way, and returned not by the way that he came to Bethel.

[11] Now there dwelt an old prophet in Bethel; and his sons came and told him all the works that the man of God had done that day in Bethel: the words which he had spoken unto the king, them they told also to their father. [12] And their father said unto them, What way went he? For his sons had seen what way the man of God went, which came from Judah. [13] And he said unto his sons, Saddle me the ass. So they saddled him the ass: and he rode thereon, [14] And went after the man of God, and found him sitting under an oak: and he said unto him, Art thou the man of God that camest from Judah? And he said, I am. [15] Then he said unto him, Come home with me, and eat bread. [16] And he said, I may not return with thee, nor go in with thee: neither will I eat bread nor drink water with thee in this place: [17] For it was said to me by the word of the Lord, Thou shalt eat no bread nor drink water there, nor turn again to go by the way that thou camest. [18] He said unto him, I am a prophet also as thou art; and an angel spake unto me by the word of the Lord, saying, Bring him back with thee into thine house, that he may eat bread and drink water. But he lied unto him. [19] So he went back with him, and did eat bread in his house, and drank water.

[20] And it came to pass, as they sat at the table, that the word of the Lord came unto the prophet that brought him back: [21] And he cried unto the man of God that came from Judah, saying, Thus saith the Lord, Forasmuch as thou hast disobeyed the mouth of the Lord, and hast not kept the commandment which the Lord thy God commanded thee, [22] But camest back, and hast eaten bread and drunk water in the place, of the which the Lord did say to thee, Eat no bread, and drink no water; thy carcase shall not come unto the sepulchre of thy fathers.

[23] And it came to pass, after he had eaten bread, and after he had drunk, that he saddled for him the ass, to wit, for the prophet whom he had brought back. [24] And when he was gone, a lion met him by the way, and slew him: and his carcase was cast in the way, and the ass stood by it, the lion also stood by the carcase. [25] And, behold, men passed by, and saw the carcase cast in the way, and the lion standing by the carcase: and they came and told it in the city where the old prophet dwelt. [26] And when the prophet that brought him back from the way heard thereof, he said, It is the man of God, who was disobedient unto the word of the Lord: therefore the Lord hath delivered him unto the lion, which hath torn him, and slain him, according to the word of the Lord, which he spake unto him. [27] And he spake to his sons, saying, Saddle me the ass. And they saddled him. [28] And he went and found his carcase cast in the way, and the ass and the lion standing by the carcase: the lion had not eaten the carcase, nor torn the ass. [29] And the prophet took up the carcase of the man of God, and laid it upon the ass, and brought it back: and the old prophet came to the city, to mourn and to bury him. [30] And he laid his carcase in his own grave; and they mourned over him, saying, Alas, my brother! [31] And it came to pass, after he had buried him, that he spake to his sons, saying, When I am dead, then bury me in the sepulchre wherein the man of God is buried; lay my bones beside his bones: [32] For the saying which he cried by the word of the Lord against the altar in Bethel, and against all the houses of the high places which are in the cities of Samaria, shall surely come to pass.

[33] After this thing Jeroboam returned not from his evil way, but made again of the lowest of the people priests of the high places: whosoever would, he consecrated him, and he became one of the priests of the high places. [34] And this thing became sin unto the house of Jeroboam, even to cut it off, and to destroy it from off the face of the earth.

INTRODUCTION:

Nine times we have the phrase "the word of the Lord". It would be good to take heed to the LORD’s message in this chapter. The Lord’s message is His Word and to take heed to that Word. God repeats Himself for our benefit that we might be spared a world of heartache.

I want us to look at this man of God. I want to learn about him. I want to learn about his life and death. I want to learn a lesson from his error.

His Christianity: God calls him a man of God. This man is a believer and a prophet. He walks in obedience to the Word of God. There is no substitute for obedience. Christians start out believing and obeying the Bible by repenting and believing on the Lord Jesus Christ for mercy. God expects obedience to characterize your whole life as a believer. The fact that this man was a Christian but lost his life in the end should cause alarm. Beware! 1 John 5:16,

If any man see his brother sin a sin which is not unto death, he shall ask, and he shall give him life for them that sin not unto death. There is a sin unto death: I do not say that he shall pray for it.

His Communication: He preached the Word. Six times out of the nine we see the Word of the Lord mentioned in connection to his ministry. He went at the Word of the Lord. He preached Word of the Lord. He did miracles by Word of the Lord. He prophesied the Word of the Lord. (By the way, 300 years later, 2 Kings 23:15-17 says, Moreover the altar that was at Bethel, and the high place which Jeroboam the son of Nebat, who made Israel to sin, had made, both that altar and the high place he brake down, and burned the high place, and stamped it small to powder, and burned the grove. [16] And as Josiah turned himself, he spied the sepulchres that were there in the mount, and sent, and took the bones out of the sepulchres, and burned them upon the altar, and polluted it, according to the word of the Lord which the man of God proclaimed, who proclaimed these words. [17] Then he said, What title is that that I see? And the men of the city told him, It is the sepulchre of the man of God, which came from Judah, and proclaimed these things that thou hast done against the altar of Bethel.) The Bible was the key to his ministry and message. No doubt, he was in the school of the prophets and the proper foundation had been laid from his youth. WHAT MARKED THIS MAN WAS A FIDELITY TO THE WORDS OF THE LIVING GOD- HE PREACHED THE WORD!

His Courage: This man was bold! He was not afraid to stand before apostate Jeroboam and preach the Truth! He preached against the altar he had erected to the golden calf. He could not keep himself from preaching the Word no matter what the opposition. Peter and John were like that.

Acts 4:20,

For we cannot but speak the things which we have seen and heard.

His Clout: His message was backed up with power! There were signs and wonders following. The king’s arm and the smashed altar. His preaching produced results. This is the New Testament pattern:

Mark 16:20,

And they went forth, and preached every where, the Lord working with them, and confirming the word with signs following. Amen.

He had power for service because he spoke in the name of the Lord and preached the Word of God. This was a man who had power in prayer as well as in the pulpit.

His Control: He had self-control. Temperance is one of the fruits of the Spirit (Gal.5:23). He would not take a reward. He had control of his fleshly appetites. He was no hireling in the Lord’s work so he refused support that came from the enemy.

Here was a man of God if ever there was one! Called into the Lord’s army as a prophet, a preacher and a miracle worker! Let’s look at his tragic demise.

His Capitulation: He fell through the word of a backslidden fellow believer. He took heed to "a word" but ignored the Word. Jeremiah 23:16 warns, Thus saith the Lord of hosts, Hearken not unto the words of the prophets that prophesy unto you: they make you vain: they speak a vision of their own heart, and not out of the mouth of the Lord.

"I’ve got a word of knowledge for you brother!"

"I just feel the LORD has another plan for your life."

"Don’t put God in a box. Don’t limit God."

"Brother, God has a bigger picture than that."

"Jesus didn’t really die for the whole world…yea hath God said?"

"I had a dream about you and God told me to tell you…"

"You don’t need to go soulwinning, that’s the preacher’s job!"

"Where in the Bible does it say you have to go to that church?!"

Concerning going to church a poet once wrote:

"Mortal! Thou standest on a point of time,

With an eternity on either hand;

Thou hast one duty, above all sublime-

Where thou art placed serenely stand."

-Hcughton.

And just so we do not let a poem get us off track, God says:

Proverbs 27:8,

As a bird that wandereth from her nest, so is a man that wandereth from his place.

His Canter: A canter is a hypocrite. He mourned at the funeral but failed to mention that he was the cause of this man’s condition. Many men are on the rocks spiritually because of heeding ungodly counsel.

Christianity is in the final death throws because of this sort of hypocrisy. They replace the Word with their own words.

No amount of religion or good works could make up for the damage that had been done to this nameless man of God.

The result of heeding man’s words above God’s Word was a lion slew this man of God.

1 Peter 5:8,

Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:

He will devour those who replace the Word with a word.
