TWO WASHBASINS October 3rd 2002

Text: John 13:3-7 & Matthew 27:24-25

John 13:3-7,

Jesus knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he was come from God, and went to God; [4] He riseth from supper, and laid aside his garments; and took a towel, and girded himself. [5] After that he poureth water into a bason, and began to wash the disciples' feet, and to wipe them with the towel wherewith he was girded. [6] Then cometh he to Simon Peter: and Peter saith unto him, Lord, dost thou wash my feet? [7] Jesus answered and said unto him, What I do thou knowest not now; but thou shalt know hereafter.

Matthew 27:24-25,

When Pilate saw that he could prevail nothing, but that rather a tumult was made, he took water, and washed his hands before the multitude, saying, I am innocent of the blood of this just person: see ye to it. [25] Then answered all the people, and said, His blood be on us, and on our children.

Here we see a stark contrast between two sovereigns. The Son of God went around doing good while Pilate was given over to evil.

These men represent:

Two Ways: Jesus was a man of humility and service. Pilate was a man of pride and compromise.

Two Worlds: Jesus lived for the world to come and for eternity. Jesus lived for others. Pilate lived for this world and for the moment.

Two Words: Jesus had the words of life which are eternal. Pilate had words of death –his words will haunt him for eternity in hell.

Two Wonders: The Creator of the Universe stooping down to wash the disciple’s feet. Pilate standing before his Creator condemning Him to death.

Two Works: The work of God and the work of the Devil.

Two Worshippers: Jesus left us this example concerning the manner in which we are to worship God. Pilate worshipped self and the tide of public opinion.

Two Workers: There are men and women of God who get down to business for the Lord and serve others. There are those who wash their hands of any responsibility in serving God. Am I my brother’s keeper? Yes, we are.

It is our responsibility to serve the Lord! Not the preacher’s. I want it spelled out loud and clear that the emphasis of Toronto Baptist Church will be soulwinning and missions.
